The Pirate Queen takes elements from the extraordinary life of
Grace O'Malley ( Grainne Uaile / Granuaile ), pirate, chieftain,
lover and mother in 16th Century Ireland.
Grace O'Malley lived and died in County Mayo in the west of
Ireland. This is where my family is from, and lives, and where I
call "Home". When I am at "Home" in Derradda (Ireland),
I can look out of my bedroom window and see one of Grace's castles.
Rockfleet Castle (aka Carrigahowley Castle) is situated on an inlet of
Clew Bay in an area called Rosyvera, approximately 3 1/2 miles from
the town of Newport.
